The 13th-century Tower known as the Sette Seghinelle rises in one of the most strategic points of medieval Siena: along the descent of the Costarella de’ Barbieri towards Piazza del Campo and on the prestigious Via di Città.
REACHING THE TOP
Climbing four flights of stairs inside Palazzo Accarigi, you reach the accessible part of the Tower.
From here you access another two flights of stairs, this time inside the Tower. At the top of the first flight you reach a room with an evocative medieval barrel vault. Climbing the second flight you finally arrive at the magnificent top of the Tower, in the open air.
The Tower, a medieval symbol of its owner’s power, was built by the Accarigi family in the 13th century and was first known as Rustici al Canto della Costarella, called the Tower of the Sette Seghinelle.
In the 14th century, the Accarigi had Palazzo Accarigi built on Piazza del Campo and on the Costarella, incorporating the pre-existing Tower and thus creating a tower–house.
The Accarigi were Guelphs, members of the “Grandi di Siena” and of the Government of the Nine, later joining the Patriciate in 1753.
Both the Tower and the Palazzo are protected as listed monuments.
According to one theory, the Seghinella was a stone ornament at the top of a tower, arranged in a chequered pattern, and the Tower was so named because at its top it had seven rows of this ornament.
The Tower is built of cavernous limestone, or “tower stone”, used in the Romanesque period for towers and noble palaces.
